B52 - The birth of a legend

The B52 Shot is also known as the “Bifi” and has a vivid history. It was first prepared in a cocktail bar in Malibu (USA) and then spread all over the world. Unfortunately, the real “inventor” is still unknown. However, the recipe has not changed over the years.

The special naming

The Shot was named after a U.S. Army warplane. The Boeing B-52 was a long-range bomber that was used in various wars. Incendiary bombs are also said to have been dropped from this aircraft in the Vietnam War. For this reason, the burning shot was named after the long-range bomber. This allusion seemed a little macabre to some people. That is why the name was strongly criticised several times. However, the name prevailed in the bartending scene. To this day, the B52 stands for a layered shot of coffee liqueur, Irish cream and overproof rum, which is served burning.

B52 - FAQ

What is a B52 Shot?

A B52 Shot is a layered “short” that is served burning. It can be ordered in various bars and restaurants, but can also be easily prepared at home. Discover the simple recipe now and prepare the drink at home.

How do you prepare it?

First pour the coffee liqueur, then the Irish cream and then the overproof rum into a shot glass using a bar spoon. This allows the liquids to settle nicely on top of each other and makes for a particularly beautiful appearance.

How is the shot drunk?

The shot is usually drunk burning with a straw. Be careful not to burn yourself on the hot liquid!

What makes the Shot special?

The B52 is a so-called “layered” shot. In these drinks, the ingredients lay on top of each other and do not mix. In addition, the shot is served burning. This allows it to stand out from various other mixed drinks.

How did the name come about?

The name is derived from a U.S. long-range bomber: the Boeing B-52. This bomber is said to have dropped incendiary bombs during the Vietnam War. For this reason, the burning shot was initially called this for fun. Over the years, however, the name became established and today the Shot is known only as the B52.
