Cosmopolitan

Despite its harmless appearance, the Cosmopolitan is not a light and mild cocktail. It is still relatively young for a cocktail and was probably popularised in its current form at the end of the 1990s. The TV series “Sex and the City” played a decisive role in the success of the Cosmopolitan cocktail. The rather tart drink was drunk again and again by the four leading actresses and thus gained a good reputation, especially among female cocktail fans.

Cosmopolitan Taste Profile

4.7/5

45 Reviews

The Cosmopolitan tastes tart and rather alcoholic. But there are also pleasantly sweet and fruity notes. You probably haven’t experienced the interplay of tart and sweet like this in any other cocktail. It is perfect for an afternoon drink or as an aperitif. What’s more, despite its name and appearance, it’s not just a treat for women.

Different variations

The Cosmopolitan has almost no different variants. There can only be an exchange between cranberry nectar and cranberry juice, or pomegranate juice. The Cosmopolitan does not have many variants, such as the Daiquiri, Sazerac or Moscow Mule.

The history of the Vodka Cocktail

The cocktail is said to have been prepared and enjoyed for the first time as early as 1934. At that time, however, gin was used instead of vodka. After the drink was mixed for the first time in the 1930s, it fell into oblivion for a long time. This even went so far that the drink disappeared completely from many menus of well-known cocktail bars. In the 1980s, a similar drink resurfaced that contained all the ingredients of today’s Cosmopolitan: Vodka, orange liqueur, lime juice and cranberry nectar. These predecessors of the Cosmopolitan were called Cape Codder and Kamikaze.

A bartender from New York named Toby Cecchini is considered the inventor of the Cosmopolitan cocktail. He used the exact ingredients of today’s drink for the first time at the end of the 1980s and thus created today’s “basic recipe”. The mix gained great fame through the series “Sex and the City”, at the end of the 1990s. The series is partly considered the renaissance of the Cosmopolitan cocktail. The drink was the favourite cocktail of the female leads in the series. It was always ordered and enjoyed by the well-known main character Carrie Bradshaws.

Due to its pink appearance, the Cosmopolitan Cocktail looked particularly stylish and thus appealing to the young women. Women all over the world emulated their favourite actresses and ordered the drink more and more often in cocktail bars. Today, the drink can be found on just about every cocktail menu and is considered a classic. Without this TV series, the drink would probably not have become so famous.
