The Planter’s Punch impresses with its sweet and fruity-mild notes. The alcoholic taste is also clearly to be tasted, but this taste is rather in the background. There are no bitter notes to be tasted in this drink.
Tips for preparing the perfect Planter's Punch
Freshly squeeze juices
For a special taste experience, you should press the juices contained in Planter’s Punch yourself. This ensures that you use only the freshest and most aromatic pineapple juice, orange juice and lemon juice.
"Standard" rum
You can use high quality rum in the preparation. However, we recommend using a solid “standard” rum. The flavour of the spirit is more or less lost in the cocktail. Therefore, you prefer to enjoy high-quality rums on ice or neat from a tumbler.
Summer feeling in winter
Even though the Planter’s Punch is more of a summer cocktail, it can also be served very well in winter. The taste is reminiscent of summer and provides a refreshing feeling. It’s also a pleasure in winter!
This is how the classic cocktail is created
The name: Planter’s Punch was first mentioned in the second half of the 19th century. Since then, the drink has been called a “classic” rum punch. Over the years, more and more different Planter’s Punch recipes were created. The mix was changed again and again and prepared differently. To this day, there is no clear recipe. The cocktail became famous through the film “Gone with the Wind”. After that, it started its triumphal procession around the world. The story of the Planter’s Punch, or rather the story of its predecessor, began on a sugar cane plantation in Jamaica. There, the drinks were served to the workers as “refreshment”. Frank Myers is considered the inventor of the Planter’s Punch rum cocktail. He made this drink for the first time at Planter’s Hotel in Charleston with Myers’s rum. That’s why Myers’s rum is still used today when mixing the drink.
The Planter's Punch belongs to the family of punches
When you hear the word Punch, most of you probably think of winter and Christmas markets where you can drink the popular hot drink Punch. The cocktail genre: Punch, however, is not necessarily associated with hot drinks. Rather, it is understood to mean tropical drinks served with various fruits. The word “punch” probably comes from Hindi and means five. This five refers to the ingredients used in the classic basic punch recipe: Arrack, lemon, tea, sugar and water. British sailors brought this word with them to Europe and spread the punch recipes here. The first mentions of a punch were made around 1635 in British seafaring documents. At that time, mostly hot winter drinks were advertised, which were complemented by Tropical Punch from 1660 onwards.
Punch is a popular drink for parties, hot summer days and evenings. The advantage for hosts here is that this mix can be prepared very easily. For authentic serving, the finished punch can be served in a large glass bowl, but serving it in an old oak barrel can also look particularly stylish. This mix appears even more graceful if you prepare it with a few pieces of apple, orange, melon or pear. The punch should be put on several hours before the party. This gives the mix enough time to infuse and makes it taste even fruitier. Only add ice and soda water at the last moment, otherwise the drink could taste increasingly watered down in the glass. The “little brother” of the punch is the “cup” cocktail. These are still served in Great Britain before the hunt. One of the most famous cup recipes comes from Pimm’s: the Pimm’s No.1.
Swizzles are also considered relatives of the punch family. They are served in a glass with a small stirring rod. The idea came to Jack Sindler in 1934 when he tried endlessly to fish an olive out of a martini. The drink was stirred several times. However, drinks were also called Swizzle in the 19th century. “Swizzler” is English and loosely translated means swindler.
