Cuba Libre tastes refreshing and very sweet. The taste of cola is clearly in the foreground, although alcoholic notes can also be tasted. The fruity-sweet taste of the lime gives the long drink a pleasant “fresh kick”. Therefore, the long drink is perfect for the summer and for parties.

The history of origins

The most original form of the drink was prepared in the 1890s. At that time, however, there was no cola in Cuba. Therefore, the long drink at that time still consisted of rum, water and brown sugar. The first Cuba Libre as we know it today is said to have been prepared in Havana in 1902. At that time, there was very little ice in Cuba. Therefore, the drinks were usually drunk lukewarm or only slightly chilled. Nevertheless, the drink became more and more popular in Cuba over the years. At the beginning of the 20th century, the long drink also became known in the USA.

By using cola, the cocktail could even be drunk during alcohol prohibition. The appearance of the long drink was more reminiscent of cola and not of an alcoholic mixed drink. For this reason, Long Island Iced Tea was also frequently consumed during this period. After Prohibition, the drink spread all over the world. Today, the drink is drunk on hot summer days and at parties. The Cuba Libre is easy to prepare and has a pleasant, harmonious taste. Prepare the drink at home and enjoy the summery long drink.
