Swimming Pool

The beautiful, light blue colour is characteristic of the Swimming Pool Cocktail. This Tiki cocktail consists not only of rum as the base spirit, but also of vodka. This creates a successful interplay between alcoholic and sweet-spicy notes. In addition, a completely different taste experience can be prepared than if only rum were used. At first sight, the Swimming Pool Cocktail consists of many ingredients, but the preparation of this drink is very simple and quick. First measure all the ingredients with a bar measure or a jigger and put them into a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes. Shake the shaker well for about 20 seconds and then strain the liquid into a glass filled with crushed ice. And that’s it. This is how easy and quick it is to prepare a swimming pool cocktail.

The sweet tropical taste

4.7/5

22 Reviews

The taste of the Swimming Pool Cocktail is very sweet, pleasantly fruity and slightly alcoholic. The refreshing drink is reminiscent of summer, sun and beach. But beware: the deceptively sweet taste can quickly deceive you into thinking that the alcohol content in the drink should not be underestimated. In terms of taste, the Swimming Pool Cocktail is more along the lines of a Mai Tai, Ti Punch or Planter’s Punch.

Still a rum cocktail or already a Tiki?

The Swimming Pool Cocktail moves gently on the edge of what can be called a Tiki. It is not made with two different rums, but with other sweet and tropical ingredients. It was created at a time when “fancy” drinks were still very much heard of. Nowadays, these drinks are rarely ordered in cocktail bars. Nevertheless, it is as close to the popularity of the Pina Colada. The main difference: this drink is characterised by a beautiful blue colour.

How the drink came into being

The Swimming Pool Cocktail was invented by one of the most famous bartenders ever: Charles Schumann. Schumann was a trained journalist, boxer, surfer and bartender. He developed the Swimming Pool in a bar in Munich as early as 1979, even though it only became really famous and officially recognised a few years later.

Schumann created and wrote various cocktail books, which are as familiar to bartenders today as 1 times 1 is to primary school pupils. In addition to “Schumann’s Bar Book”, the “Tropical Bar Book: Drinks and Stories” was published in 1986. In this book, the Swimming Pool recipe was published for the first time. The 1991 bar book “American Bar: The Artistry of Mixing Drinks” contained another recipe in which the rum content was reduced and the pineapple juice increased. This is probably the recipe you will find in most cocktail bars today where you order this drink.
