The Old Fashioned is the classic whisky cocktail. Bartenders and whisky lovers swear by this drink. The Old Fashioned is the reason why spirits should not be consumed in their purest form, but always slightly refined as a cocktail. Discover the simple recipe now and prepare the drink at home!
Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe
- 6 cl bourbon or rye whiskey
- 1 cl sugar syrup
- 6-7 dashes Angostura bitters
- One orange zest
Step by Step Guide
- Measure out all ingredients with a jigger and stir in a mixing glass.
- Then strain through a bar strainer into a tumbler.
- Then serve or enjoy yourself!
To begin, you should pour the whisky into a glass and add sugar syrup and Angostura bitters. This mix should now be stirred for 5-7 minutes (!). Some bartenders swear by stirring the drink even longer, others prefer stirring for 20 seconds. Then strain the drink through a bar strainer into a tumbler. Finally, squeeze an orange zest over the drink and add it to the tumbler. Now discover and enjoy.
The Old Fashioned should be prepared with extreme caution and care. Although the ingredients and preparation is kept simple the finer points should not be neglected in the preparation.

Old Fashioned Taste Profile
51 Reviews
The Old Fashioned tastes complex and intense. The whiskey gives it a certain spiciness, as well as a noticeable alcoholic taste. However, the orange zest also releases fruity flavours. If you use rye whiskey, it only develops its full aroma in combination with sugar and orange peel. The drink is ideal for a cosy evening in front of the stove, but can also be enjoyed in trendy cocktail bars.
Tips
Make your own sugar syrup
Even if many people don’t know it, you can make sugar syrup yourself. It’s easier than you think and much cheaper than bought syrup. Especially if you often prepare cocktails, you should visit our blog and read the article: “Make your own sugar syrup”.
Lemon zest
Try the Old Fashioned Cocktail with a lemon zest instead of an orange zest. The taste will be more acidic. This makes for a special taste experience in this cocktail!
Classic in a Martini Glass
Why not serve the Old Fashioned in a martini glass? Your guests will not believe that you are serving this classic cocktail in a martini glass. The glass adds style and elegance. Two points that go perfectly with the Old Fashioned, don’t they?
The history of the whisky cocktail
There are many legends about the history of the Old Fashioned cocktail. One story says that the drink was first prepared around 1900. Other stories say that the drink was first created in 1800. At that time, the pharmacist Antoine Peychaud is said to have created a drink called “Peychaud”, which is very similar to the Old Fashioned.
The reason for the different stories is that whisky at the time was of a much poorer quality than the whiskies of today. So bartenders and whiskey lovers looked for a way to drink the spirit despite the inferior quality. They simply tried sweetening whiskey with sugar to make it less tart and more enjoyable. Sometimes the whiskey was also refined with absinthe or brandy.
