The New York Sour is relatively simple to prepare, but requires a few minutes of time. First add the whisky, lemon juice, sugar syrup and egg white to a cocktail shaker. It is best to use a jigger to measure out the ingredients. The egg white does not necessarily have to be used. However, the New York Sour simply looks nicer in the end with egg whites.

Shake the shaker well for about 10 seconds. Then open the shaker and add a few ice cubes. Now shake again for another 10 seconds. Then you can pour the drink into a tumbler filled with ice cubes. Now very carefully place a bar spoon on top of the drink and very carefully enjoy the red wine over the bar spoon on top of the other liquid, so that the red wine “floats” on top of the other ingredients. Now serve immediately or enjoy yourself!

The New York Sour is a whisky cocktail with a varied flavour, which convinces above all by mixing different tastes. At first, you get a pleasantly fruity and mild taste of the red wine in your mouth, which is underlined by the creamy taste of the egg white foam. After a few sips, this taste is replaced by the sweetish and at the same time fruity-sour taste of the drink. Tart whisky notes can be tasted, which are pleasantly underlined by the fruity-sour lemon juice. All in all, very varied and unique. Most comparable to the Whisky Sour or Primitivo cocktail.

How the New York Sour Cocktail was created

The New York Sour Cocktail is a traditional sour cocktail, which at its core consists of a spirit, the juice of a citrus fruit and sugar (sometimes also with egg white). This type of cocktail also includes various other cocktails, such as the whisky sour or pisco sour. The Daiquiri is also sometimes included in this type of cocktail.

There are many stories and myths about the origins of the New York Sour. The drink was probably first prepared and recorded in the middle of the 19th century. In 1862, the whisky cocktail was part of the well-known bar guide “Jerry Thomas Bartenders Guide”, which is probably familiar to every bartender. Now and then it is claimed that the drink was still known under the name Continental Sour at that time. Unfortunately, it is impossible to say whether this is really true. Simply put, the New York Sour Cocktail is a simple variation of the Whisky Sour Cocktail, with the difference that a sip of red wine is added to the glass. If you like the Whisky Sour Cocktail, you should definitely try this recipe!
