The Daiquiri is a very famous rum cocktail from Cuba. The drink was first prepared in the land of cigars, sugar cane plantations and rum. The Daiquiri cocktail was appreciated and loved by Ernest Hemingway. This love went so far that he immortalised the drink in several books. The Daiquiri was considered a top seller in Cuban cocktail bars during the time of Prohibition in America. American tourists enjoyed an alcoholic and tasty drink here, even though or precisely because they were not allowed to do so at home.

How does the daiquiri taste
36 Reviews
The Daiquiri tastes sweet, sour and fruity. The sweetness of the sugar harmonises perfectly with the citrus sharpness of the lime, followed by the alcoholic-aromatic taste of the rum. Due to its high variability, every cocktail lover should actually find his or her suitable daiquiri.
Daiquiri Tips
Fresh lime juice
When preparing a Daiquiri cocktail, you should always use fresh lime juice from untreated, organic limes. The flavour of this fruit is usually much milder and much more natural. This allows you to serve and enjoy the cocktail washed down.
Make your own sugar syrup
You can easily make your own sugar syrup for cocktails. This syrup is easy to make and has a pleasantly sweet taste. This means you no longer have to resort to bought syrups. You can find out exactly how to do this in our blog: Make your own sugar syrup.
High-quality rum
We recommend using a high-quality rum when preparing the Daiquiri. The taste of the spirit is clearly in the foreground. Therefore, you should rather go for a high-class rum and enjoy the drink to its fullest.
History of the Daiquiri
Exactly how the drink came into being cannot be clarified beyond doubt: Some people say that Jenning Cox, the manager of the mine in Daiquiri, wanted to mix a gin sour for guests. When he realised he had no gin, he simply used rum as a substitute spirit. It also allowed him to introduce visitors to the country of Cuba and its culture. He mixed them a drink from local ingredients: Rum, lime juice and sugar. Thus was born the drink known to us today as the daiquiri. Other stories tell us that Cox instructed a bartender at the Venus Hotel in Santiago to mix a “rum sour”, which gave rise to the drink we know today.
It is known that there were already variations of the rum sour before. Whether Cox borrowed from these recipes is not known to this day. The drink became increasingly popular and was ordered and drunk by more and more people. It spread to Havana and eventually beyond the borders of Cuba, and is still known throughout the world today. In the capital Havana, the drink received its “finishing touch”. Instead of brown sugar, white sugar was now used. In addition, the drink was refined with limes instead of lemons and even the preparation was changed. As a result of the “fine tuning” in Havana, the daiquiri was only shaken in a cocktail shaker and no longer stirred in a mixing glass. After it was refined again in Constante Ribalaigua’s legendary cocktail bar, the saying arose: “Cuna da la Daiquiri”, which loosely translated means “The cradle of the Daiquiri”.
In Cuba, the drink was not known by the name “Daiquiri” for a long time. The Cubans called the drink: Canchánchara. It was a mix of sweet and sour (lime). The drink was prepared and consumed in the fields of Cuba. So it was not a drink of the noble cocktail bars, rather a drink of the common man or the people. The drink became really famous through the famous writer Ernest Hemingway. He drank litres of Daiquiri (according to rumours) and occasionally tried variations of the sweet and sour drink. This transformed the Caribbean drink into an American drink. Famous personalities such as John F. Kennedy count the daiquiri among their favourite aperitifs. The drink was also ordered by Fredo Corleone in the famous Mafia film “The Godfather”.
A Tropical Drink in the Book
The most ordered type of cocktail in cocktail bars are probably “tropicals” or tropical drinks. But that was not always the case. In the past, drinks were usually much more alcoholic and much drier than today (for example, the Dry Martini, Old Fashioned, Manhattan Cocktail, Ti Punch or Negroni). The drinks that used to be ordered were exactly the opposite of Tropicals: alcoholic and strong.
From the 1990s onwards, tropical drinks became more popular and gained top positions on cocktail menus. The fruits contained in Tropicals can be mixed with many other spirits and are ideal for covering a wide range of tastes. An example of this is the fruit daiquiri. In addition, these fruits can pleasantly complement the high-proof spirits. In this way, the drinks taste more fruity than alcoholic. The basic spirits for tropical drinks are usually cachaça, rum, mezcal or tequila. Tropical drinks also offer a welcome alternative for non-alcoholics: mocktails. These are cocktails that are prepared entirely without added alcohol.
