Penicillin Cocktail Recipe
- 5 cl whisky
- 2 cl lemon juice
- 2 cl honey-ginger syrup
- 1 cl Islay Single Malt Whisky
Step by Step Guide
- Put all ingredients except Islay Single Malt Whisky together with ice cubes into a cocktail shaker and shake well.
- After shaking for about 20 seconds, pour into an ice-filled tumbler and carefully add the Islay Single Malt Whisky.
- Now just garnish with a ginger slice and serve.
When you prepare this drink, you should first prepare the honey ginger syrup. You can easily do this yourself by heating 200g of sugar and about 100g of ginger together with 200 ml of water in a pot. Make sure that the mix is only heated and should not boil. Let everything boil for about 15 minutes over medium-low heat. Stir the drink constantly with a spoon so that nothing can stick to the bottom. Now you can let the pot cool down and store it in the fridge overnight. The next day, strain the syrup through a cloth so that you get a clear syrup without any pieces. You can now store this syrup in the refrigerator for about 7 days and use it to prepare cocktails.
For the Penicillin cocktail, put the honey-ginger syrup you have just prepared into a shaker together with 5 cl of whisky and 2 cl of lemon juice. Add a few ice cubes and shake the drink until the outside of the shaker fogs up slightly. Now you can strain the mix through a bar strainer into a tumbler filled with new ice cubes. Carefully add the Isla whisky. It is best to drizzle this onto a bar spoon so that it can easily stand out from the other ingredients. Now just garnish with a slice of ginger or a cocktail cherry and serve. This is how quickly you can prepare a penicillin cocktail at home.

How the drink was created
The Penicillin Cocktail is still considered a fairly young mixed drink. It was only developed in the 2000s by the reassured bartender Sam Ross, who was working at the New York cocktail bar Milk & Honey at the time. Thanks to its unique taste and distinctive name, the drink quickly established itself as a modern drink on cocktail menus around the world. Some even count the drink’s rapid rise as one of the greatest cocktail success stories of the 21st century.
For the invention of the drink, Ross used the recipe of the Gold Rush as the basis for a new cocktail. The Gold Rush consists of the ingredients: Bourbon, lemon and honey. Ross changed some of the ingredients so that the smoky and strong rye in the whisky came out better. He also replaced the honey with a syrup so that the drink tastes fresher and is easy to prepare. All in all, a varied and very popular cocktail was created that you should definitely try!
