The Vieux Carré is a very tart and classic cocktail that is definitely not for fans of fruity and sweet cocktails. In this whisky cocktail, there is an interplay between the tart and strong-intense flavours of the whisky and cognac, which are complemented by the varied flavours of the herbal liqueur. The vermouth provides a light fruity and sweet touch that loosens up the drink a little.
The bitters give the drink the final kick and make it a truly worthy representative of a whisky cocktail. This drink is most comparable to the intensity of an Old Fashioned or Dry Martini (as a gin cocktail). Try the Vieux Carré yourself to convince yourself of its taste!
How the whisky cocktail that is still famous today came into being
Like various other cocktails, the Vieux Carré also originated in New Orleans. Walter Bergeron created the drink, which is still legendary today, at the Hotel Monteleone in the 1930s. The name is derived from a French proverb that translates as “old quarter”. This refers to the French quarter of New Orleans. After the drink became famous not only in New Orleans but also in other cities and countries, the Vieux Carré cocktail is still one of the absolute classics that belong on every cocktail menu. Try the drink yourself and let yourself be surprised by its unique taste!
