The taste of the Gimlet is strongly dependent on the gin used. Actually, the cocktail tastes like gin, which is slightly underlined with sweet, fruity lime juice. Therefore, you should take special care when choosing the gin. The cool, refreshing taste makes the gimlet very good at beach parties in summer. You can also enjoy the drink in spring as a “mood setter” for summer. Try the cocktail and convince yourself of its special taste.

Everything for the taste

The gimlet was invented as early as the late 18th century, but not yet under this name. At that time, spirits still had a very hard and edgy taste. They were often undrinkable and could not be enjoyed pleasantly. The quality of spirits has improved a lot until today. Because of the harsh taste, people started mixing spirits with sugar and/or citrus fruits early on. Well-known cocktails that resulted from these experiments are called Whisky Sour, Gin Fizz, Tom Collins and the Gimlet.

The 18th century versions were probably still made with rum from the Caribbean. It was only when British sailors brought gin to the Caribbean that gin was also mixed with lime juice. The sailors brought these “recipes” back to England. That was in the 19th century. Over the years, the quality of spirits improved considerably and cocktail recipes became more professional. Thus, the gimlet slowly spread throughout the world via Cuba and England. The reason for this: the simple preparation and the few ingredients used for the cocktail. Another special feature: the Gimlet is said to have been Ernest Hemingway’s favourite drink. However, there is no proof of this.
