The Martinez Cocktail is a classic drink with a rather tart and intense flavour profile. Intensely alcoholic flavours of the gin as well as the botanicals can be detected. Thanks to the wormwood, slightly fruity and sweet flavours can be tasted as well as a bitter touch. This drink is most comparable to a Negroni or Manhattan cocktail. So if you are looking for a sweet and fruity refreshing cocktail, you should go for one of these. If you like more tart and bitter cocktails, you will love the Martinez!
Where does it come from?
The question of when, where and how the Martinez cocktail originated is still debated by bartenders and cocktail lovers. The most persistent rumour describes that the legendary bartender Jerry Thomas invented the drink after a guest from the port of the town of Martinez in California ordered a similar drink. However, the residents of the town of Martinez attribute the creation of the drink to a local and unknown bartender.
Over the years, there have always been new recipe variations, variations and the preparation with different gins and vermouths. In addition, different mixing ratios of gin and vermouth can still be found today. No matter which mixing ratio and which spirit you should choose: Try the Martinez cocktail yourself and let yourself be enchanted by its taste!
